About the Author

Frédéric Delavier is a gifted artist with an exceptional knowledge of human anatomy. He studied morphology and anatomy for five years at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied dissection for three years at the Paris Faculté de Médecine.   The former editor in chief of the French magazine PowerMag, Delavier is currently a journalist for the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle and a contributor to several other muscle publications, including Men's Health Germany. Delavier won the French powerlifting title in 1988 and makes annual presentations on the sport applications of biomechanics at conferences in Switzerland. His teaching efforts have earned him the Grand Prix de Techniques et de Pédagogie Sportive. Delavier lives in Paris, France.

I am not a bodybuilder, but I do some strength training with free weights. I find this book super helpful in clearly illustrating what muscles are worked by which exercise. For example, the pectorals. Other books or websites might say a given exercise works the pecs, but this book shows exactly which part of the pecs is being worked. The author also shows the primary muscles being used and those that are being worked secondarily. It's not just weightlifting exercises, either. Common exercises like push-ups and pull-ups are shown.Frederic Delavier is a skilled illustrator and his drawings are very well done. Delavier goes beyond anatomy and gives helpful tips on preventing injuries. He also shows how connecting tissue works and about bone structure. I am getting a lot of use out of this book. It's even interesting to read independent of workouts. If you're interested in anatomy, you will find this book interesting, too.

If you want to work out at home, it's great, if you want to join a gym, you'll need Volume II.Strength Training Anatomy Workout Volume II will show you how to make the most of the gym if you want some serious strength training. It has many different routines, the low-down on all the equipment you'll find at the gym, great advice on optimizing every technique, and even more drawings to help guide you to excellent technique. This is the book to get if you want to get into body building.Overall, these books are great. Delavier and Gundill translate their extensive anatomy and weight-lifting knowledge into language anyone can understand and information is succinct so reading's a pleasure. Do they work? I gained 15 lbs in 6 months after having plateaued with my previous, self-made routine.

I owned the first edition of Strength Training Anatomy (blue cover) for nearly 15 years and I've been recommending this book to my clients for that long as well. I decided to pick up the new 3rd edition (red cover) to update my library and also to write this review.This book's concept and contents have been imitated many times, but Delavier's is the original and the best.In a nutshell, Strength Training Anatomy is a book of expertly drawn illustrations of the human body (over 600) performing weight training exercises. The primary muscles being worked are colored in red and clearly labeled. The bones, muscle fibers and muscular attachments are also beautifully illustrated.The book is divided into seven sections: Arms, Shoulders, Chest, Back, Legs, Buttocks and Abdomen. No space is wasted with introductions - the book jumps right into arms in the opening pages. A page is devoted to each exercise, and a small amount of text accompanies each illustration, explaining proper form and giving additional tips or precautions. Sidebars show exercise variations, start and finish positions and additional details (such as deep muscle anatomy with the exact muscle tendon insertions on the bone).The length is 192 pages, so it's not overwhelming - it's very digestible, yet it's also very thorough in terms of the number of exercises covered. All the major and important barbell and dumbbell exercises are included. In addition, you'll learn a variety of cable exercises and a handful of common and useful machine exercises.I don't think there's any reader from any demographic or experience level that won't benefit from owning this book. It will be appreciated by all ages and by men and women, especially since both male and female models are used in the illustrations. For beginners, this could be a training instruction "bible" for learning how to do the exercises properly and understanding exactly what muscles are working.Some people might suggest this book is only suited for the beginner, but I think advanced trainees and even fitness professionals will find this book valuable as a reference guide and may even want to keep it on their shelf within arms reach.This material is not just for bodybuilders, but as a bodybuilder myself, I think there is another potential benefit of this book that I haven't seen anyone else mention. Bodybuilders need to develop the ability to visualize muscle actions and learn how to enhance their mind to muscle connection. Studying the drawings and looking at the muscles engaged, the direction of the fibers and where they insert and attach could be a great tool to help with these mental skills.As for the 3rd edition, there is new material in this update, including much more content (it's longer, with more exercises). There are also new sections on stretching and avoiding common injuries.The publisher, Human Kinetics consistently puts out some great titles, and this is among the best of them. The book quality is excellent, including the cover, binding, paper, and again, the illustrations on every page are fantastic. The author is clearly a skilled artist who also has a medical-level understanding of the human body.Potential readers should know before buying, that this book does not contain workout programs - it focuses solely on individual exercise instruction and exercise anatomy. That doesn't detract from the value in my opinion, it actually helps keeps this volume concise and focused on one thing: strength training exercises and anatomy.On that note, again, this is not a text-heavy book and while you do get an explanation and illustration of each exercise, you don't getin-depth written details on biomechanics and muscle actions. You're mainly getting exercise instruction and muscle anatomy lessons.Also, this IS an anatomy book, so if looking at body parts and human anatomy bothers you, then you might want to take a pass. (All body parts are depicted, in places).In summary, this book deserves its 5-star ratings, and its sales and longevity in the fitness book market are not surprising.

One of few books in my vast collection of "How To", "Manga School", " Manga Mania" ect books that deserve 5 stars.Firstly, I'd like to say this book doesn't exactly cater to people new to the art of drawing manga. If you want to learn how to draw manga from the basics look into other sources (Not as if this book advertised itself as such, but I don't want people thinking because it says "Create Your Own Cool Characters" you can have no drawing experience and be able to achieve what this artist does.) While this book went farther in depth than I would have ever thought from the title and Amazon preview, all of the pictures the author is showing us how to color are already drawn line arts. There is a section where they teach you how to draw heads, go into perspective and give you poses, but if you're new it's not enough to get you going to full, detailed line arts. Basically, you don't learn how to draw the line arts in this book, you learn how to color them. Just putting that out there.That said, I highly recommend this book if you want to familiarize yourself with Copics/Neopiko/Prismacolor markers(Cheaper brands will not work effectively if you're trying to color as shown in the book). Actually, this book is a absolute must when buying your first set of Copics. I believe there are tips in this book that you will not find elsewhere. And for each picture the author is showing us how to color she lists all tools needed and colors by Copic number so you can use exactly what she uses. Other reviewers went into detail about what else this book shows you so I won't repeat.If you don't use markers I recommend this book anyway as inspiration. There is very beautiful art to be seen in this book. Just looking through it made me want to better myself as an artist.

Okay, so since most people have already talked about the quality of the instructions and how much thought and detail was put into the book, I won't review that aspect of the book for the most part (although don't get me wrong, it really does cover a wide range of things, not only how to color and tell stories with color).For one, I don't know if someone already said this or not, but Supittha starts with a chart of materials that you'll need, okay, they have that in a lot of art books. But then she includes a color chart of Copic Markers, the differences between Copics and other markers, and she even says what the difference is between, say, Ciao Copics and Sketch Copics, and she even says what KIND of Copics she is using so if you want to start coloring with Copics, you can see what kind she uses for you to try and/or start out with. She also gives some very nice techniques, like how to achieve a bubbly effect with a Colorless Blender Marker, etc. etc. And then she actually gives instructions for drawing heads, adding hair, coloring it... But the awesome thing is about this section is that you can use the head & hair tutorials to draw not only manga but a MANGA-LIKE REALISTIC picture (By drawing eyes, nose, face shape, etc. like she instructs you to, with more detail or whatever and some slight alterations). So not only has her art book help improve my manga, but she's helped with my realistic drawings as well!! She also teaches you about lighting--now I'm sure you're skeptical about what she gives here since most art books demonstrate lighting with a sphere and then move on. However, she doesn't stop there--she even tells you how to do reflected light (not step-by-step, just with a before and after, although this is still VERY helpful). This ALSO helps with both manga and realistic pictures! I have never seen instructions for anything dark elf-related EVER, so seeing a skin coloring tutorial for one made me so happy!! She also gives some ideas for fantasy themed outfits, eg Mage outfits, kimonos, etc. not too huge a section really although parents shouldn't have to worry as the outfits are better than many of the outfits you'll even see at just the beach or swimming pool. If you have any doubts about buying this book, then you really shouldn't--this is a great art book and I highly recommend it, although those looking for a more anime-like manga art book may be slightly more disappointed, I love the art style so I'm happy :3 In fact, this isn't even a book for just those coloring with markers, this works for colored pencils too (I use both art medias) and it probably would work for other art medias too but I don't really know. I got this book for the Kindle so I can't review the quality of the actual book, although I will say that the thing about having the book on the Kindle is that sometimes the pictures and steps/ notes/instructions don't match up, but it's only to be expected so oh well. I'd rate this 9/10 stars overall

This book is great and a must-read for every physician or physician-to-be. If we have to learn the Krebs cycle, I cannot fathom why we do not have to learn the content in this book.I am currently a 4th year medical student and have recently completed my MBA as well; I think this book is equally (if not more) useful than my MBA in terms of managing my money as a physician. I would consider this a "First Aid for the Personal Finances of a Physician". The book is high-yield and concise yet provides "recommended additional reading" at the end of nearly every chapter. By the time you have finished this book, you will be able to speak intelligently about many common financial topics such as investing, retirement accounts, taxes, loan repayment options, etc.If you do not know ANYTHING at all about how to invest, what 401(k) and IRAs are, or what tax bracket you are going to fall into- this book will probably save you hundreds of thousands of dollars. I am not a salesman or advertisement-type-person, I sincerely believe this book can save people hundreds of thousands of dollars over their entire career.In conclusion, every physician/future-physician should spend $17 on this short book and rest assured that they will competent in most personal finance topics.

So most parents don't educate their children about money and schools definitely do not. I heard the worst financial and career advice imaginable from college professors. This is more about personal finance than investing. Buy it before you apply to med school. The author repeatedly points out that most physicians don't earn that much anymore but are tempted to live as if they do. Much of the book offers common sense suggestions such as spend far less than you earn and save the rest. Perhaps the highlight of the book is that the author suggests that if you know enough to determine if a financial advisor is knowledgeable and isn't going to rape you with fees, then you know enough that you don't need a financial advisor. In my experience, that is largely true, a bit like choosing your physician.You don't know what you don't know so either you can read a lot of Suze Orman or you can hire a smart CFA. However, be aware that a CFA is not an accountant and not a real estate, estate planing, or tax attorney. The portion on investing is perhaps too superficial. The author does cover personal finance such as disability insurance, excess liability, student loans and so on. I take issue with his advice on taxes. He suggests pushing the boundaries when paying taxes. Yes, there are some grey areas, and yes you might save a few dollars pushing those until you trip an IRS flag and are audited. Then you will pay your accountant for the audit and if you fight it, you will hire a tax attorney at $400 per hour. Assuming that you are right and that you win (and the first does not in any way guarantee the second) your expenses will be substantial, and if they are larger than your tax savings, too bad. In addition, you will likely be audited several more times. Congress writes tax laws, the IRS writes the tax code, and then there is case law; there is no one person on the planet who understands it all.

I'm 12 years into private practice and found this book very helpful. I've seen enough 70+ yr old physicians dragging themselves to work every day, still carrying a mortgage on their million dollar home and leasing their BMW, to know that I don't want to go that route. Modest living and aggressive saving are key in the current environment of medicine and this book outlines how. It should be mandatory reading for every new physician but even established docs will learn key pearls. Let me summarize the whole book in a sentence: save 20% of your gross yearly for retirement before your discretionary spending, don't worry about looking like a rich doctor for your neighbors, don't get divorced, and focus your investing on Vanguard indexed funds in 401(k)s and IRAs. Done. Everything else is optional. Do this from residency, and with just about any physician income, you'll be set for retirement.

Recommended to me by an attending during my third year of medical school. The earlier chapters are easy to read - and this is coming from someone who knows next to nothing about finance, economics, or any thing money-related. The later chapters were tougher to read, but it definitely gives you a good breakdown. This book was published in 2014, but Dr. Dahle created a website of the same name - whitecoatinvestor.com. Would still recommend having the printed copy for reference.

I'm a personal finance junkie and recently discovered the White Coat Investor online. I don't impress easily, and count myself a devotee of Warren Buffet and John Bogle. Now add Dr. Dahle to the list. This book is one of the best personal finance books you can read anywhere. You don't have to be a health professional despite the title, although you'll get more out of it if you're a non-MD who makes 6-figures or has a high net worth. He's easy to read, follow and understand. He pulls no punches. I really enjoy his approach to life, finances and family. Count me a huge fan. A must add to any personal finance collection. Bravo.

At first I thought this was going to be a book that had the basic financial information - saving in mutual funds, stock market basics, retirement, Etc. I have been in solo practice for about 4 years, so I am a relatively new doctor, and relatively modest debt, compared to my classmates. I am in a metropolitan area, where Private Practice is quickly becoming a thing of the past. When my friend referred this book to me, he is much younger than me, and I was thinking I wasn't going to learn much. But, I read the book in its entirety. This book addresses private practice, separate tax entities, other Investments outside of Medicine, so it is definitely my cup of tea.
