"The year's most fascinating, heart-breaking rock book."—Rolling Stone"An engrossing collection of clues."—Entertainment Weekly"His words kick and scream."—Chicago Daily Herald“Compelling.”—Seattle Times“No editing, no footnotes: The Nirvana singer’s Journals is the year’s most fascinating, heartbreaking rock book.”—Rolling Stone Magazine“Especially riveting.”—The Observer Magazine“Compelling reading...a look into the creative process of one of rock’s true artists.”—The Seattle Times“The daily diary of an American dream—and nightmare...Beneath all the layers of irony and sarcasm and humor and stoner realism, Cobain had a gift for sincerity, which is everywhere evident in his journals...The book is swarming with life, and it’s irresistible to anyone who cares about the music.”—New York Magazine“Illuminating...charming...we catch glimpses of Cobain’s wry, mischievous humor.”—Newsday“Our most elaborate first-hand evidence of the inner life of one of rock’s most important figures.”—New York Daily News“Laced with humor and horror...wrenchingly candid.”—LA Times“Simple and plain, Kurt Cobain was a fuckin’ genius...Journals may become his most enduring body of work. If Cobain’s life was a movie, Journals is the director’s cut, the musings and contemplations of a mad genius. If you want to know who Kurt Cobain was, this is a necessary piece of the complex puzzle to ingest. Yes it is an intrusion into the guarded secrets of this complicated man's mind. But guess what - he's not here to protest. Is it disrespectful to read a dead person's diary? It is if you're looking for something lurid [which is not in these Journals]. I do recommend doing some research first so that the undated entries make more sense. Listen to Nirvana's music and the pre-Nirvana music. There's a lot of early Kurt in here, the literally starving penniless musician. This is where the successful Nirvana came from. Look at performance videos, watch interviews. If you still find Nirvana interesting, still find Kurt Cobain worthy, then buy these Journals. He is smart, angry, funny, articulate, with a rare ability to stand outside himself and see himself clearly. He doesn't always like what he sees, both in himself and in the world, the music industry in particular. Oftentimes I will know a particular story as told by a band member or friend, then read his version in his Journals, and break up my insides with laughter. He really does crack me up, makes me smile so many times. Especially after reading the Journals, I wish I had known him, could have hung out with him, called him Friend. He is worth the effort.

I did not even thought there is something like this personal diary/journal by Kurt Cobain until I happened to be skimming through the craigslist for sale ads and saw someone selling a used notebook. I thought to myself why would some crazy person selling a used written over college notebook and expect someone to buy it? Until I read the ad closely about Kurt Cobain diary, that's when I looked it up here in amazon. The craigslist seller lives too far to be worth the travel and purchase it. In the 1990s I liked Nirvana's music just a tad more than let say Guns N Roses but I didn't felt a high respect for Cobain, probably just the prejudice and what the media portrayed him. But I figured who am I to judge, I'm nobody, he's famous and made millions so I tried to learn more about his life, and visited his former home here in Seattle where I also live. This journal made him and his life and his band Nirvana more interesting than ever. Cobain is smart and funny. Some of these letters he wrote and drawings he drew just made me smile. This is definitely a great collection for Nirvana fans.

"Oh yeah and our final name is NIRVANA"I know there are some who feel like reading this is somehow violating Kurt, and I know that "rape" quote has been floating around in some reviews. However, with respect to that, Kurt was referring to not only his journals, but a slew of other items that were stolen from him and the band. Also, Kurt said a lot of things that were contradictory. He at one time made a comment saying he would like to maybe someday publish his old journals. He said being so famous so fast was conflicting, then he would say it's not so bad. Literally, on the first page of this book is a note from Kurt to someone (maybe his first girlfriend that he lived with?) that says "Don't read my diary when I'm gone. Ok I'm going to work now, when you wake up this morning please read my diary. Look through my things, figure me out." And was written at the same time, its obviously not 2 separate entries. That's who Kurt was. Yes, we still can't necessarily say that Kurt would want people reading these, but I still didn't feel all too guilty reading these. I sat with this book for a while, so I can digest the beautiful, scrawled words one of my all time heroes. You will know Kurt better than you ever thought. Sometimes, it can be tricky determining what time period some of the entries and notes were in, because Kurt didn't date his entries. However, there isn't really meant to be a narrative here, is there? These were Kurt's private thoughts. There are entries from the late 80s, with Kurt lamenting about his miserable experience at school and his salvation at the hands of punk rock. Even at a younger age, Kurt was so self aware and intuitive and an excellent people-reader. We also get an insight into his extreme anger at others. There are many fairly violent fantasies he conjures up. He was a very talented artist, and many of his drawings are included. We see the early days and Kurt's ambition and determination to get Nirvana jumpstarted. Also included are drafts of song lyrics. I got the chills reading the still unfinished lyrics to songs like Lithium and All Apologies and Teen Spirit and Drain You and'Aneurysm', and 'Dumb'--especially reading Kurt's scrawl of "I'm not like them, but I can pretend". Then, later on, we see Kurt's frustration with music journalists (put very succinctly by Kurt), and brainstorming of video ideas, including Heart Shaped Box, in which Kurt's notes pretty much exactly map out how the video would turn out. "In Utero"s original title was "I Hate Myself and I Want to Die", and Kurt writes quite a bit about it. I'd have liked to have seen what made Kurt ultimately change the title, unless it's documented somewhere else, but no big deal. Kurt was so eloquent in so many ways, and his journals confirm that from a young age he stood up against unjust oppression of any kind, especially against women and homosexuals. He was a sensitive, intelligent man.I know some have criticized the book, because Courtney sold them, so Courtney "controlled" the story, so to speak. And many have it in their head that Courtney probably withheld some entries that maybe were less than flattering about her. Kurt wrote about everything in his life, so it would stand to reason that there would be plenty about Courtney and Frances, yet there really isn't much. However, I don't really find this suspicious. There are a few mentions of Courtney. But Think about it, would you want your husband's or wife's most intimate thoughts and most intimate frustrations about your marriage published? It's no one's business. I don't exactly understand why people they have a right to read that. It's her prerogative to release that or not. People are just immediately suspicious of anything she does, or doesnt do. Even if he wrote some negative things about her, why would she want that out there? Nobody would. No one wants to look bad. I think there are so many (myself included) that hold Kurt pretty sacred. And, most Kurt fans have animosity toward Courtney, and they want to see something, in writing, concrete, from Kurt that is derogatory or negative about Courtney. That way, it would validate their own hatred for her. There is, however, a love letter to Courtney included in here that is probably the most beautiful letter I've ever read, and written in a way that only Kurt could write. There is also a heartbreaking, I'm assuming unsent, letter that Kurt wrote to his dad. Kurt documenting his descent into addiction is also heartbreaking and a must read for anyone thinking of taking drugs. Since the entries are undated, don't expect to find out exactly what Kurt wrote in the days before he died. There is simply no way to know. It's amazing that Kurt saw himself as a worthless, emaciated, uneducated loser yet he's one of the best lyricists our generation, any generation, was blessed with. He was wise beyond his years, and even his journals entries are some of the best stuff I've ever readALso, it's literally the scanned pictures of Kurt's journals. There is no typed transcription. Which makes it even better--the picture quality is so incredible that it looks like you are reading the actual journals of Kurt's. You can see the pen marks jump off the page. It looked so realistic that if one didn't know better, you would be able to erase the pencil writings yourself. And it's better this way, the dynamic of the book would be completely different and not as compelling if it was just transcribed.Bottom line, Kurt is one of my heroes. If he is one of yours, too, then buy this. You won't regret it. You will have a much more well rounded perspective of Kurt. Yes, not everything that went on in his life is spelled out, but you will still gain a huge insight. It made my heart ache, and realize just how big of a loss it was when he died. I know that I wouldn't be quite the person I am today if I hadn't gotten the cassette of nevermind when I was 8. Rock music died with Kurt Cobain unfortunately. And I get pissed and angry that he committed suicide. We know he adored Frances with all his heart, and you would think she would be enough to keep him going. Kurt himself talked at length about his parents' divorce and the horrible effect it had on him, how he so desperately wanted the 2 parent household. He of all people should have known better, what he was doing to his daughter. He wrote "her (frances') life will be so much better without me" in his suicide note. Come on, kurt. How could that be true? But, I guess that's the difference between people who aren't suicidal and those who are too far gone.

Awesome book! An interesting read. I read this book in only 3 days! Features Kurt Cobain's drawings, poems, previously unreleased song lyrics, drafts, letters he wrote, plans for music videos, diagrams and much more! Any Nirvana fan or fan of Kurt Cobain will enjoy this book. This book is is a representation of a great artist, a legend, a visionary, and a singer/songwriter/composer who earned his place in the history of music. Welcome to the artistry of Kurt Cobain and his creative process. A perfect collection of works from one of the greatest musicians of all time. 5 stars.

My daughter loved this as a way to gain a deeper insight into Kurt Cobain's thinking and creative process. We appreciate the idea of making it look like a spiral bound notebook, and the reproductions of his actual journal pages were fun to look at. My daughter will tell you that this is the book to buy if you want to know what Cobain was really like. I was very pleased with the quality for the low price. I highly recommend if you are a Cobain/Nirvana fan or if you have an angsty teen who loves to create music and is looking for her muse.

Love reading this book, comes in one book, with two journals, does have some drug use story and references and other risky material, so if your buying for a younger person I would definitely go over it and make sure it's ok for them. It gives an insight on Kurts musical, personal, and artistic life. If your looking to find anything about his murder/suicide there's not much to find. Great read, can be a little hard to read as it is written in his handwriting.

Brewing by Sean Michael

Book four in the Beer and Clay series

As the love between Toby and Damon deepens, the man intent on destroying their happiness increases his efforts.

Toby and Damon are back in Brewing, their relationship deepening more despite the continuing efforts of a stranger to bring them down.

Helping in their efforts are their best friends Peter and Christian. Peter’s new investment in a three-story building on the same block as Damon’s bar offers Toby the opportunity of having a studio close to home. It also gives Peter and Christian a home they’ve made together, which Peter hopes will bring them closer together.

A former soldier, Christian has a hard time letting go and finding his subspace. It’s going to take a lot to break the conditioning he’s learned in the Army. Peter is stubborn, though, and he’s seriously falling for his strong sub.

Will yet another attack bring down two couples this time?

The Beer and Clay series

They say opposites attract and Corner Pub owner Damon and shy artist Toby attest to that.

Toby’s happy with his predictable life, even if he does secretly wear a plug to the Corner Pub every Thursday night. But when Damon shows him the word of the sub/Dom lifestyle, his Thursday night plug-wearing suddenly seems tame.

Join these two men as they explore plugs, piercings and making more than art and ale in this new series by Sean Michael.

About Sean Michael

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organising his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channelling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago".

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

The Doctors' Plague: Germs, Childbed Fever, and the Strange Story of Ignac Semmelweis (Great Discoveries)By Sherwin B. Nuland

"Riveting" (Houston Chronicle), "captivating" (Discover), and "compulsively readable" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Surgeon, scholar, best-selling author, Sherwin B. Nuland tells the strange story of Ignác Semmelweis with urgency and the insight gained from his own studies and clinical experience. Ignác Semmelweis is remembered for the now-commonplace notion that doctors must wash their hands before examining patients. In mid-nineteenth-century Vienna, however, this was a subversive idea. With deaths from childbed fever exploding, Semmelweis discovered that doctors themselves were spreading the disease. While his simple reforms worked immediately—childbed fever in Vienna all but disappeared—they brought down upon Semmelweis the wrath of the establishment, and led to his tragic end.

From Publishers Weekly In 1847, one out of every six women who delivered a baby in the First Division at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus hospital in Vienna died of childbed fever, a situation mirrored at other medical facilities in Europe and the U.S. Bestselling author Nuland (How We Die), a clinical professor of surgery at Yale, details in lively descriptive writing just how Ignac Semmelweis, an assistant physician at Allgemeine Krankenhaus, uncovered the origin of this devastating epidemic. Although theories were advanced that attributed it to unhealthy conditions in the expectant mother's body, Semmelweis launched his own investigation. He traced the high mortality rate from this fever in the First Division to the medical doctors, who went straight from dissecting cadavers to delivering babies without washing their hands; they were, in fact, infecting their own patients. Semmelweis's doctrine was controversial in medical circles, Nuland explains, partly because the eccentric physician's self-destructive personality alienated possible supporters. Drawing on careful research, the author convincingly argues that, contrary to popular myth, Semmelweis was not a persecuted victim but, despite his brilliance, was his own worst enemy. He was committed to a public mental institution and, according to Nuland, probably suffered from Alzheimer's and died from beatings administered by hospital personnel. In this engrossing story, Nuland shows how Semmelweis's groundbreaking discovery of how childbed fever was transmitted was later validated by the work of Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister. FYI: This volume is the first in Norton's Great Discoveries series, which highlights scientific achievement.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From The New England Journal of Medicine Many people have heard of Semmelweis, whose fame rests on having shown in the 1840s that deaths from puerperal fever (an infection following childbirth) at the Vienna Lying-in Hospital could be reduced by making doctors and medical students wash their hands in a disinfectant solution before entering the maternity ward. His observations were largely ignored during his lifetime and for many years after his death in 1865. Near the end of the 19th century, however, and especially after the publication of a hagiographic biography in 1909, Semmelweis's reputation was raised to the skies. I know of no one else in the history of medicine whose reputation rose from the extreme of oblivion to reverence as one of medicine's greatest heroes. After he had acquired heroic status, it was asserted that Semmelweis was the first to discover that puerperal fever was contagious, that his work had led to the abolition of puerperal fever, that his now famous treatise, The Etiology, the Concept, and the Prophylaxis of Childbed Fever (1861) (Figure), was one of the greatest medical works of the 19th century, and that lack of support by his colleagues in Vienna drove Semmelweis mad. Since the 1970s, however, a small band of Semmelweis scholars have shown that few of these assertions are correct and that the truth about Semmelweis is much more complex -- and certainly more interesting -- than the conventional picture. That Semmelweis made some brilliant observations in 1847 on the manner in which puerperal fever is transmitted is beyond doubt. But he was his own worst enemy. His dogmatism, arrogance, hostility, and unforgivable rudeness to colleagues who dared to question his views, combined with his failure to publish his findings for 14 years, damaged his reputation. Such revelations prompted Sherwin Nuland to publish a paper entitled "The Enigma of Semmelweis: An Interpretation" in 1979. This book is a welcome expansion of that paper, with important additional information. There is broad agreement within the small group of historians who have studied Semmelweis since the 1970s that he possessed a complex and difficult character and about how his reputation rose from oblivion to fame. There are still disputes about both the nature of the mental illness from which Semmelweis suffered in his last few years and the cause of his death. Nuland, who believes that Semmelweis died as a result of a brutal attack by the staff of the lunatic asylum to which he had been admitted a fortnight before his death, has produced new evidence that supports this theory. But Nuland's certainty that Semmelweis suffered from Alzheimer's disease is not shared by most historians. That he was mentally deranged, or insane, or mad (whichever term you prefer) in his last few years is beyond dispute; but retrospective diagnosis of a mental illness that occurred in the 19th century is so difficult that exactly what illness Semmelweis was affected by may never be known. Unfortunately, this book has no index, no footnotes or endnotes, and only a brief bibliographic note. There are many places where one longs to know the evidence for new data; and there is the problem of the first chapter, which presents a detailed account of a young girl who becomes pregnant, is admitted to the General Hospital of Vienna in 1847, and dies of puerperal fever. The chapter is fictional in style and contains colloquial speech. For instance, a medical student says to the girl, "Please pay attention, young miss!" and the girl says to a nurse, "Please don't tell me I could die having a baby. Oh, please, please, Nurse, I couldn't bear to think of it," to which the nurse replies, "Hush, hush. . . . You'll get yourself all worried and excited for no reason." Because no source is given, I can only assume that part or even the whole of the first chapter is historical fiction. If so, it is out of place in an otherwise admirable history of the life and work of Semmelweis. Irvine Loudon, D.M., F.R.C.G.P.Copyright © 2004 Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved. From Booklist Nuland's second excellent book this year (after the superb memoir, Lost in America [BKL N 15 02]) focuses on a physician who, like Nuland in the midst of his career, suffered from severe psychological disease. Unlike Nuland, Ignac Semmelweis (1818-65) probably couldn't have recovered and, in any event, died under odd circumstances days after admission to a mental hospital. Nuland's thoughts about Semmelweis' illness and death are in the final chapter, and waiting for them is eminently worthwhile because of the riveting account of childbed, or puerperal, fever that comes first. Incidence of the bacterial disease attained massive proportions with the rise of the modern hospital and of giving birth there rather than at home, and enormous numbers of newborns as well as mothers perished. As the book's title suggests, dirty doctors (and medical students) spread the disease, for antisepsis and asepsis were unappreciated--indeed, unknown--until, after Semmelweis' death, Pasteur and Lister verified the existence and dangers of germs. A few physicians had figured out the how of puerperal fever before Semmelweis, but his fanaticism for cleanliness in practice at the general hospital in Vienna, the medical capital of Europe, demonstrated huge reductions in the disease. He failed to publish adequately, however, and establishment physicians, wedded to general theories of disease, pooh-poohed his practices, preventing their acceptance elsewhere. In the midst of the controversy, Semmelweis ran home to Pest, Hungary, a medical backwater, and into obscurity. This is one of the greatest stories in medical history, and perhaps no one has told it better than Nuland does. Ray OlsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

“May this very important and enticing book find its way into the hearts of readers near and far so that it can perform its mysterious and healing alchemy for the benefit of all.” —John Kabat-Zinn, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are and
Professor of Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School

The Transformative Power of Mindfulness

Alchemists sought to transform lead into gold. In the same way, says Tara Bennett- Goleman, we all have the natural ability to turn our moments of confusion or emotional pain into insightful clarity.

Emotional Alchemy maps the mind and shows how, according to recent advances in cognitive therapy, most of what troubles us falls into ten basic emotional patterns, including fear of abandonment, social exclusion (the feeling that we don’t belong), and vulnerability (the feeling that some catastrophe will occur). This remarkable book also teaches us how we can free ourselves of such patterns and replace them with empathy for ourselves and others through the simple practice of mindfulness, an awareness that lets us see things as they truly are without distortion or judgment. Emotional Alchemy provides an insightful explanation of how mindfulness can change not only our lives, but the very structure of our brains, giving us the freedom to be more creative and alive.

Here is a beautifully rendered work full of Buddhist wisdom and stories of how people have used mindfulness to conquer their self-defeating habits. The result is a whole new way of approaching our relationships, work, and internal lives.

According to ancient legends, alchemists use a magical philosopher's stone to transmute lead into gold. In Emotional Alchemy, Tara Bennett-Goleman shows readers how they can use this alchemist metaphor to transform emotional confusion (lead) into insightful clarity (gold). And what does the magic stone represent? "Mindfulness," a lifelong practice that can bring readers more joy and contentment than the gold, according to Bennett-Goleman. "Mindfulness means seeing things as they are without trying to change them," she writes. "The point is to dissolve our reactions to disturbing emotions, being careful not to reject the emotion itself."

Those who have never entered this practice will find a concise and articulate teacher in Bennett-Goleman, who leads national workshops with her husband, author Daniel Goleman (Emotional Intelligence). What make this book such an exciting breakthrough is Bennett-Goleman's ability to apply Buddhist mindfulness to Western psychology. She shows how emotional alchemy can be used to address typical habits, such as mistrust, fear of rejection, feeling unlovable. Readers will also find fascinating scientific facts on how emotional alchemy affects brain chemistry and even cancer survival. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
"We all desire happiness and do not want suffering." The Dalai Lama introduces Bennett-Goleman's first book with this trademark refrain, adding the deceptively simple Buddhist truth that much suffering is caused by our "disturbing emotions." Bennett-Goleman, a psychotherapist and longtime student of Buddhist meditation, draws on decades of experience to elucidate how the Buddhist practices of nonjudgmental awareness or mindfulness and the cultivation of compassion can unclasp the grip of the most addictive and deeply entrenched emotional patterns. What sets Bennett-Goleman's work apart from other contributions to the emerging field of Buddhist-oriented psychotherapy is her particular expertise in "schema therapy," which applies the consciousness of thought patterns that characterizes cognitive therapy to the deep-seated emotional habits that are formed in childhood. Thus she shows readers how our habitual fears and defenses get triggered again and again in our relationships, mechanically perpetuating old pain and obscuring reality. The author offers anecdotes from her clinical work and from workshops she conducts with her husband, Daniel Goleman, author of the megabestseller Emotional Intelligence. While Bennett-Goleman will undoubtedly benefit from the huge interest in her husband's book and from the burgeoning market for applied Buddhist wisdom in general, her distinct power flows from her sincerity. She is not given to neat formulations, yet her stories have the persuasiveness of experience, of transformation drop by drop. "In Western psychology it is often said that one needs a strong ego," writes Bennett-Goleman. "But in the Buddhist sense what we need is strong confidence." Many readers will trust the path that she forges here. (Jan.) Forecast: Foreign rights to this title have been sold in Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain and Latin America, Sweden, Taiwan and the U.K. Given the excellence of the book, a planned major push from Harmony, and the obvious benefit of a title and author name approximating those of Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence, hefty sales and major interest are likely

From Library Journal
Science journalist Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence began as a collaboration with Bennett-Goleman, his psychotherapist wife. Now they have produced the excellent Emotional Alchemy, which has a foreword by the Dalai Lama. Blending cognitive therapy, cognitive neuroscience, Buddhist psychology, and meditation, Bennett-Goleman suggests that many people are ruled by maladaptive behaviors (schemas) stemming from childhood coping mechanisms. She investigates ten basic maladaptive behaviorsDfive used in close relationships and five for the larger communityDand also explains that schema therapy deals with four human responsesDthoughts, emotions, actions, and relationships. Each chapter ends with exercises designed to help the reader explore the root of the problem addressed. As more and more Americans come to expect quick fixes to problems, Bennett-Goleman sends an important message: the healing process is a slow one. Other books of interest on this subject are the Dalai Lama's The Art of Happiness (LJ 4/15/99) and Jon Kabat-Zinn's Wherever You Go, There You Are (LJ 12/91).
