Al Santini has over 35 years of experience teaching automotive electronics, including 22 years as an instructor at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Mr. Santini currently teaches technician classes on vehicle emissions, including OBD-II. I have used a scanner in the past to obtain fault codes but was frustrated by some of the code descriptions not really describing the source of the problem. This book is a really straightforward explanation of what OBDII really is, how it works and what the codes really mean. The author has obviously spent a great deal of time teaching this subject and he leads the reader from simple principles all the way through to a real understanding of how the sensors and components work together and how the computer checks to see that the emission system is performing as it should. All the individual emission system functions are described along with real examples of the diagnosis of faults. Monitors, what they are and how to interpret the enabling criteria to ensure they run to completion. The use of mode 5 & 6 for diagnosis is also explored.If you are an beginner or an experienced mechanic who needs to expand your knowledge then this book is for you.

When I received this book I couldn't believe how small it was. The copyright was 2011 and its 2017. The examples were on cars from 2004 and 2005. A lot has changed in 11 or 12 years. The price of this book should be 19.99 not 95.00 dollars. Most of the info can be obtained from YouTube for free. I'm still taken back at the price and info in this book.

As a Dentist I knew nothing about OBD codes, scanners, nor their use for diagnosis issues with vehicles. After issues with my trucks had been repeatedly mis-diagnosed or improperly repaired I decided to learn for myself. After a few days of reading online and specifically purchasing and reading this book, I under took the task of diagnosing and repairing my beloved 03 Ford Expedition 5.4L issues. I purchased: a scanner, the INNOVA 3160d . The codes from this along with observations lead me to discover the intake manifold was leaking into my number 5 & 6 plugs. I disassemble the parts necessary, replace the manifold, and with the help of this book restored my truck to near perfect specifications. Remember, I am a Dentist, not a trained mechanic. I owe much of my success to this well written book ( Along with the excellent You-Tube videos by SCANNER DANNER. An instructor in the use of OBD Diagnostics to properly diagnose and repair vehicles.
